FICTIONS

Utopian/Dystopian

  • 1984 by George Orwell
    • This books was too much for me in grade 11. I wanted to read it for fun but found myself forcing my dim-witted brain to enjoy it. It’s in the list because I learned something from it and it’s the reason I began to read other Utopian and Dystopian fictions.
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
    • “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” Chapter 10, pg. 118
  • Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
    • this was written for children but adults could enjoy it too
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
  • The Giver by Lois Lowry
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Mystery

  • And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
    • I believe this was my first mystery novel. We were to read it in grade 7 and I remember I thought the one behind the crime was a woman. Who could’ve thought a man would be responsible for a carefully, planned crime?
  • Disordered Minds by Minette Walters
  • Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christy
  • Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
    • number 1 mystery novel in my list
  • The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

  • A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
